Instituto Estetico Manila leaned on Greg Dolor’s superb all-around game as it turned back a fighting Philippine Navy side, 25-22, 25-22, 27-25, on Saturday to kick off its title drive in the second Spikers’ Turf Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan City.
Dolor unloaded a game-high 18 hits, including 12 attack points, and complemented his solid offensive game with six blocks to power the Phoenix Volley Masters to the 74-minute victory.
“He carried us in this match, we feed on his energy today (yesterday),” said IEM coach Ernesto Balubar of his prized hitter.
Balubar said his wards hope to do better this year after failing to even make the semifinals of this same conference and the Reinforced Conference last year.
“We are upbeat of our chances because my players are really determined to bounce back this year,” said Balubar.
IEM actually won the first-ever men’s league’s which spiced up the Shakey’s V-League season in 2014 but struggled when the organizing Sports Vision put up the Spikers’ Turf last year.
Jeffrey Jimenez, Warren Pirante, Ian dela Calzada and Ian Conde combined for 22 hits for the Volley Masters, who repulsed the stubborn Sailors in the first two sets before surviving their rivals’ gritty stand in the third to complete the straight-set victory.
Kurt Rosete fired 15 hits, including 13 on attacks, while Nur Madsairi added seven points and Alvin Cacayuran and Keylin Premaylon chipped in four hits apiece for Navy, which struggled with its blocking and reception.
