Promising netter Khim Iglupas with Taiwanese Lee Kuan Yi in won the girls’ double crown of the 2016 Nan Ying Cup International Junior Championships held at the Tainan Xinying Tennis Courts in Tainan, Taiwan.
The second-seeded Iglupas and Lee survived the unheralded Japanese tandem of Mako Ganaha and Nao Shimoji in the gold-medal match via a thrilling 7-6 (4), 3-6, 10-8 victory.
Iglupas and Lee secured a spot in the finals by ousting Hsia Ho Chao and Shish Hsin-Yuan of Taiwan in the first round, 6-4, 6-4; another Taiwanese pair of Kuo Pei Hsuan and Lin Hsuan Yu in the quarterfinals, 4-6, 6-2, 10-8; and fourth seeds Joanna Garland of Taiwan and Jessie Jiaxin Gong of Canada in the semifinals, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Iglupas, however, was not as lucky in the singles play of the Grade 3 tournament sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
She scored a 6-3, 6-4 win over Hsia in the first round then blasted Chen Yuelin of Taiwan in the second round, 6-1, 6-2, before losing to top seed Cho I-Hsuan of Taiwan in the quarterfinals, 0-6, 2-6.
Another Filipino John Bryan Decasa Otico also succumbed in the boys’ singles as he suffered a heart-breaking 4-6, 6-4, 4-6 loss to third pick Moerani Bouzige of Australia in the second round.
He earlier defeated qualifier Li Bo-Han of Taiwan in the first round, 6-2, 6-3, to arrange a showdown with Bouzige.
This will be Iglupas’ second title this year after ruling the singles event of the Hong Kong ITF Junior Tennis Tournament 2016 held in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong in January. EMIL C. NOGUERA
