Ilocos Norte marks 196th year

The Ilocos Norte province celebrates its 196th Foundation Anniversary today. Gov. Imee Marcos will lead the celebration, which will feature the “Gameng ti Ilocos Norte” (Treasures of Ilocos Norte) at the “Arte Luna” Gallery in Paoay town. “The exhibit showcases the Ilocano culture particularly “abel” (hand-woven Ilocano textile) artworks by local artists,” Marcos said. Inabel is done on traditional wooden looms by Ilocano artisans using weaving techniques. Recently, Marcos provided seed capital to local loom weavers to promote the inabel craft as a source of livelihood. The governor also initiated training and workshops to promote innovation in abel designs, targeting their younger constituents for them “not to lose the valuable craft that identifies them as Ilocanos”. The ‘Arte Luna’ is a gallery beside the UNESCO heritage site Paoay Church.
