Vigan City, Ilocos Sur: If Cebu is known for its dancing inmates, Ilocos Sur takes pride of its acting inmates, Gov. Ryan Luis Singson said. The Ilocos Sur Provincial Jail (ISPJ) recently showcased the talents of selected prisoners in a stage play – “Misericordia” – that dwells about mercy depicting the life of a prisoner. Angelo Aurelio wrote and directed the play that runs for 50 minutes. The production took two months to train the performers. The play has an approach of zarzuela to impart the Ilocano traditional arts. “Through the process of immersion in the development and rehabilitation of inmates, the play exemplifies the powerful role of theatre as catalyst for change”, the writer-director said. The inmates ended the play teary eyed, believing every one of them deserves a chance to correct their mistakes and finally be freed.
