Iloilo City eyes bamboo houses

ILOILO CITY: The city government in collaboration with the Homeless People’s Federation of the Philippines (HPFP), Technical Assistance Movement for People and Environment and Hilti Foundation based in Liechtenstein, an autonomous principality between Switzerland and Germany, jointly launched a Bamboo Housing Site at the Uswag Subdivision, San Isidro Relocation Site in Jaro district. A Memorandum of Agreement for the project was signed on Tuesday. HPFP regional coordinator Sonia Cadornigara said they were able to make another breakthrough in exploring the viability of locally available bamboo with the assistance of experts from University of the Philippines (UP) in Los Baños and treatment facility in UP Miagao for houses to withstand up to 255kph wind. The federation had built three demonstration housing units and the construction of 20 units is still ongoing at the relocation site in response to the city’s housing backlog.
