ILOILO CITY: A municipal mayor in central Iloilo started a crackdown against bookies—most are barangay captains—of illegal numbers game like jueteng and the dubious small-town lottery. Mayor Alex Centena of Calinog, Iloilo, sent a letter dated May 24, 2013 to village chief Santos Enriques of Brgy. Poblacion Centro and village chief Vicente Arroyo 3rd of Barangay Poblacion Delgado to stop their illegal operations as soon as possible. Both barangay officials are tagged by Centena as bookies operators of the illegal numbers game. “The bookies you operate is a gambling operation which is illegal,” the Calinog mayor told the barangay officials. Reports from Calinog showed that, both barangay chiefs were former supporters of Centena but in the May 13, 2013 midterm elections, both did not support the mayor for his reelection bid. Instead they supported his political opponent.
