ILOILO CITY: A total of 1,000 completed housing units for the city’s informal settlers were turned over by contractor JD Legaspi Construction to President Benigno Aquino 3rd last week as completed and ready to accommodate families ejected from the banks of the Iloilo River, creeks and other danger zones. Aquino, accompanied by Senate President Franklin Drilon, Secretary Rogelio Singson of the Department of Public Works and Highways, Secretary Mar Roxas of the Department of Interior and Local Government and National Housing Authority Manager Chito Cruz, inaugurated the two-storey houses known as the Iloilo River Plains Subdivision Phase I in barangays Camalig and Lanit in Jaro district. Considered as the biggest housing relocation site for informal settlers in the Visayas, the project cost P170 million that includes P46 million for land development and P124 million for housing construction at the city-owned land of 5.6 hectares.
