Iloilo opens first sundown clinic for MSM, transgender


ILOILO CITY: The first public sundown clinic, from 5 to 11 p.m. Monday to Friday excluding holidays, will be open to the public in this city on October 3 to serve the needs of male having sex with male (MSM) and transgenders. City STI, HIV and AIDS program coordinator Ma. Odeta Villaruel said the Iloilo City Social Hygiene Clinic and Department of Health regional office established the sundown clinic for STI and HIV prevention, testing and treatment services to MSM and transgender people. Villaruel added that with the increasing cases of HIV among MSM, a need for the health facilities, particularly the social hygiene clinic, to rebrand and make them more attractive and MSM and transgender-friendly facilities. The country has been experiencing an upsurge in HIV infections in the last three years. According to the Integrated HIV Behavioral and Serological Surveillance conducted by the DOH-NEC, the country’s new HIV infections were occurring in males, particularly MSM.
