ILOILO CITY: A total of 22 city public schools will receive this week a donation package consisting of 44 analog closed- circuit television (CCTV) cameras and data video recording (DVR) equipment from the Chua family of this city to be installed in their respective schools.
City Councilor Nielex Tupas said the units were coursed through his office to pursue the ICT-CCTV project he is endorsing for the schools. The Division of City Schools selected the first batch of beneficiary schools.
A memorandum of agreement will be inked soon between the City Division of Schools, the school recipients and the city government for the awarding and turnover of the CCTV units.
The school division has 65 elementary and high schools. The city government and Tupas will be looking for other donors to complete the CCTV system in all schools in the city.
Tupas said public schools are not included in the list of mandatory facilities to be installed with CCTV cameras for security purposes under a regulation ordinance. Only high-risk businesses such as banks, money changers, pawnshops, jewelry stores, money carriers, private schools, transport terminals, and gasoline stations are covered in the ordinance.

Dyjee Gallega of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) explained that CCTV cameras will be used as a surveillance system and crime deterrent, for the protection of school property, to promote a safe and caring environment, to monitor and curb truancy and to monitor students’ punctuality.
The city councilor said the initial batch of recipient schools are seven district schools, 13 secondary schools and the Iloilo City Community College (ICCC) and Technical Institute of Iloilo City (TIIC).
