Iloilo storm surge wreck boats, homes

Tidal surges causing strong winds left wrecked houses and boats in the province and city of Iloilo.

Gale-force winds lashed the northern part of Iloilo’s Estancia town at about 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, causing a massive tidal surge that destroyed properties in the area.

Estancia Municipal Disaster and Risk Reduction and Management Council’s Eugene Tentativa reported at least 50 boats have been damaged by the storm.

Included in those damaged were fishing boats, passenger boats and service boats that were docked off Estancia Port.

Adjacent Carles town had several fishing and passenger boats damaged by the tidal surge.
Jerry Bionat from the Iloilo Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said that three villages were submerged in water in Barotac Nuevo town.

Homes in Guintas, Lanas and Talisay were also partially submerged underwater after strong winds fanned the rise of water level in nearby fishing ponds.

In the city of Iloilo, strong winds damaged some 40 homes that are made of light materials in Bito-on village of Jaro district.

The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Western Visayas reported that those affected are in evacuation areas temporarily.

Local governments in the area, together with different government agencies, are conducting relief efforts.
