ILOILO CITY: Abyan Ilonggo Partylist is proposing for the creation of the Metro Iloilo Special Economic Zone Authority and Freeport (MILECOZONE) in Western Visayas, specifically to be established in Iloilo.

“This will be a special economic zone with a gateway to international trade,” said partylist president and first nominee Rolex Suplico.

Suplico said that it will be patterned after the Zamboanga City Special Economic Zone Authority and Freeport (ZamboEcoZone), which is currently the only special economic and Freeport zone in the entire Visayas and Mindanao.

He pointed out that through the creation of the economic zone in Zamboanga, the province was able to invest Php9.7 billion in 2015, which is higher than the previous Php9.8 million in 2014.

“If Zamboanga can do it, why not in Iloilo City and the province. The economic zone will be critical and vital economic hub design to bring positive change to the city and province of Iloilo as well as to the entire Western Visayas through jobs creation and investments,” Suplico said,

“I would like to invite and attract foreign direct investments inside Western Visayas,” he added.

Specifically, Suplico said that they aiming to hit Php10 billion investments through the MILECOZONE.

“I propose that this will be situated in Leganes where we can reclaim land from the sea to serve as the free port then the special economic zone be established inside Panay , as well as in Guimaras and Negros Occidental,” Suplico said.

If created by law, the MILECOZONE will be the second economic zone and free port in the Visayas and Mindanao after the ZamboEcoZone.

While they are yet to gather 250,000 votes come election in May, the nominee said that they have already prepared the document to be submitted to the Congress if elected.

  1. Bakit ngayon lang naisip yan ni Mr. Rolex? Dahil wala sya plataporma na iba kaya kinuha ang idea sa Zamboanga at ngayon ay nilalako ang idea para manalo? In the first place, you do not need a congressional seat to do that. The Local Government Code allows that already. It is just a matter of working with the governor who can pass a Provincial Resolution to declare a site as one. Pag funding, they can do reverse investments or counter trade with proprietary technology owners to can establish their manufacturing plants there and give them fiscal incentives.
