ILOILO CITY: Ilonggos here are bracing up for an impending food shortage for a few months as an aftermath of Super Typhoon Yolanda. While the supply of rice is assured, Department of Agriculture Regional Director Larry Nacionales said there is an impending shortage of fruits especially bananas, papaya and mangos in Western Visayas. Furthermore, local vegetables such as leafy greens, tomatoes, eggplant, okra, string beans, ampalaya and squash will be in short supply as farmers will have to replant these vegetables. Early vegetable harvest will be from two to three months and consumers are enjoined to plant their own leafy vegetables even in pots or at the backyard so as to have continuous supply of vegetables for the family meals.
