Filipino Grandmaster (GM) Oliver Barbosa started his bid on a high note by scoring a couple of victories in the 4th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games 2013 men’s classical chess being held in Incheon, South Korea.
Barbosa subdued FIDE Master (FM) Alkhoori Ibraheem Hoha-med Ahmed of the United Arab Emirates in the first round and International Master Nguyen Duc Hoa of Vietnam in the second round to share the top spot with nine other players.
GM Mark Paragua is in a group of 1.5-pointers.
Paragua split the point with South Korean Nanjo Ryosuke in the opening round then outclassed FM Kyaw Lin Naing of Myanmar in the next round.
In the women’s classical division, Woman IM (WIM) Janelle Mae Frayna joined the squad of 1.5-pointers after trouncing Ahmed Nihaya of Maldives and splitting the point with WIM Khademalsharieh Sarasadat of Iran in the second round.
WIM Catherine Perena toppled WIM Methmani Nelunika of Sri Lanka in the first round and but lost to WIM Nguyen Pham Le Thao of Vietnam in the second round. Perena has one point.
Nguyen along with Chinese Hou Yifan and Zhao Hue, Indonesians Irine Kharisma Sukandar and Medina Warda Aulia, Qatari Zhu Chen, and Singaporean Li Jin Jeslin Tay are leading the pack with two points each.
