Filipino International Master (IM) Oliver Dimakiling pocketed the top honors in the 43rd Selangor Open Chess Tournament held at the Cititel Mid Valley Grand Ballroom in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The 35-year-old Dimakiling collected seven points on five wins and four draws to win the nine-round tournament.
Dimakiling scored victories over Lieu Chin Yung of Malaysia in the first round, Chan Kim Yew of Malaysia in the second round, Ummi Fisabililah of Indonesia in the fifth round, IM Jimmy Liew Chee-Meng of Malaysia in the seventh round and FIDE Master (FM) Yeoh Li Tian of Malaysia in the eighth round.
He split the point with Sheng Ng Jen of Malaysia (third round), Eric Cheah of Malaysia (fourth round), compatriot IM Rolando Nolte (sixth round) and IM Dede Lioe of Indonesia (ninth round).
Nolte placed fourth overall with 6.5 popints on four wins and five draws while another Filipino bet IM Haridas Pascua, who has inferior tiebreak points, ended in sixth with the same 6.5 points on four wins and five draws.
The other players who scored 6.5 points were Yeoh, Lioe, Nolte, IM Ali Muhammad Lufti of Indonesia, FM Andika Pitra of Indonesia, Kamal Abdullah Mohd of Malaysia and FM Wong Yinn Long of Malaysia.
The other Filipino entries were Nelson Villanueva in 12th place with six points, and IM Emmanuel Senador and Efren Bagamasbad in 24th place with the same five-point output.
