International Master (IM) Jan Emmanuel Garcia took the solo top spot after five rounds of the 2013 Asean Age Group Chess Championships rapid chess event being held at the Imperial Mae Ping Hotel in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Garcia outclassed FIDE Master (FM) Sumiya Bilguun of Mongolia in the fifth round to raise his score to 4.5 points on four wins and one draw in the Open 20-under category.
Another Filipino, National Master (NM) Alcon John Datu is occupying the second position with four points. He drew with compatriot FM Haridas Pascua in their fifth-round meeting.
Pascua, for his part, is sharing the third spot with FM Nguyen Van Hai of Vetnam and Tan Weiliang of Singapore with 3.5 points apiece. Nguyen toppled FM Tin Jingyao of Vietnam while Tan outplayed FM Tran Tuan Minh of Vietnam.
In the Open 16-under class, Jerad Docena and FM Paulo Bersamina remained on track with four points each, good enough to stay at the second place.
Docena whipped Nguyen Tri Thien of Vietnam while Bersamina defeated Ding Tze How Dilwen of Malaysia in their respective fifth-round games.
FM Lu Chan Hung of Vietnam is leading the group with a perfect five-point output. Hung was responsible for Docena’s third-round loss and Bersamina’s fourth-round defeat.
