International Master (IM) Rolando Nolte ended the season on a high note by topping the 5th Penang Heritage City International Chess Open 2013 held
at the Red Rock Hotel in Penang, Malaysia.
Nolte scored 7.5 points in the nine-round tournament to claim the top honors and the 5,000 Malaysian Ringgit champion’s purse. He outclassed Malaysian Yeoh Li Tian in the final round.
Filipino IM candidate Roel Abelgas, IM Andrey Kvon of Uzbekistan and FIDE Master (FM) Riste Menkinoski of Macedonia registered seven points each to share the No. 2 position.
IM Luis Chiong IV, FM Nelson Mariano III and Ivan Gil Biag of the Philippines are in
a group of 6.5-pointers along with Grandmaster Alexander Fominyh of Russia, FM Deni Sonjaya of Indonesia, and Yeoh Li Tian, Fong Yit San and Marcus Chan of Malaysia.
World’s youngest FM Alekhine Nouri made it a double celebration as he dominated the Under 8-category.
Nouri, who just turned eight last December 12, had a total score of 5.5 points.
Filipino National Master Carlo Magno Rosaupan settled for second place in the Challengers Section with 7.5 points. Gelar Sagara of Indonesia took the crown in that event with 8.5 points.
