• Incentive-based approach vs multi-million garbage haul costs

BAGUIO CITY: An incentive-based approach on waste segregation is being pushed to address the problem on garbage instead of spending millions of government funds for hauling them towards landfills outside the city. Jose Mencio Molintas, mayoralty bet of the “GoMoBil” ticket, encourages everyone to adopt innovative and creative practices in segregating garbage such as a “food for trash” system wherein residents can turn in their segregated garbage for a kilo of rice, vegetables and fruits. This, instead of spending government funds and dump collected trash to Urdaneta and Tarlac. The city produces 402 tons of garbage daily and 192 tons are brought to landfills in the lowlands and spends P70 million annually to haul its garbage.
