Pinoy Ho beats Russian netter

FILIPINO Jasmine Ho thrashed Russian Regina Zabarskaya 6-0, 6-1, on Tuesday at the start of the main draw of the 2011 Philippine Investment Management Inc.-International Juniors Tennis Championship Junior’s Circuit Week 1 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Manila.
Ho, last year’s youngest champion in the 18-and-under stable of the Philippine Columbian Association, relied on her solid backhand volleys to rout her Russian opponent on the way to the second round of the event backed by the Philippine Tennis Association.

“I have a great showing after the rain. I’m hoping to do well in the next round,” said the 15-year-old Ho. “I’m so happy to win my first match in the main draw.”

Ho’s compatriot Maria Angela Sunga failed to enter the second round after absorbing a 1-6, 0-6 decision loss from Taiwanese Zhi-Huan Eva Chen.

In the other girl’s singles matches, Edan Silva of Great Britain crushed Filipino Isabella Orteza, Japanese Miki Kobayashi trounced Indian Deria Nur Haliza and Anna Grigoryan of Russia beat Marien Ante of the United States.

Meanwhile, the boy’s singles matches were cancelled due to heavy rains. The games will resume on Wednesday.
