PRETTY PANAMERA

PORSCHE at the recent Paris Motor Show pulled out a pleasant surprise as it presented its Panamera Sport Turismo concept car, which the carmaker touted as a demonstration of how “amazingly intelligent and efficient drive technology might look in the design language of tomorrow.”

The Sport Turismo gets Porsche’s next-generation hybrid drive under an evolutionary, sporty body that sheds off the awkward proportions plaguing the Panamera sedan—or four-door coupé, as carmakers call such models these days. Porsche also confirmed that many of the styling cues worn by the Sport Turismo herald the look of upcoming Porsches.

The concept car’s Liquid Metal Blue color is contrasted by dual-spoke, two-tone wheels with brake calipers painted Acid Green. An “e-hybrid” badge on both sides of the car refers to its planet-friendly powertrain, as do the milled aluminum battery housing mounted under the boot floor, which is made of electrochromatic glass and allows a view of the energy source.

Porsche said that the Sport Turismo is designed to be driven in pure electric mode up to a speed of 130kph, with a range of 30 kilometers, as the car’s electric motor makes 95 horsepower. Its 3.0-liter, supercharged V6 engine, meanwhile, spins out 333 horsepower. Combined, the propulsion systems are good for a naught to 100kph time of under six seconds, with a fuel consumption of less than 3.5 liters per 100 kilometers and CO2 emissions of 82 grams for every kilometer.

So, this isn’t just a pretty Porsche. It’s powerful and parsimonious, too.
