| Jagged edges don’t mean this picture is pixelated—the car really is a full-size model of Ferrari’s 2011 F1 car that’s almost completely built from Lego bricks. A structure beneath means the model can actually sit a person in the cockpit. |
FORMULA One supremo Bernie Ecclestone could not be reached for comment while there is no word yet from world motor sport governing body FIA—odd, considering they must have been aware of this already as the car has made its appearances in a number of venues worldwide.
It’s a version of Scuderia Ferrari’s F1 racecar, and it’s mostly made from Lego bricks.
The car is a product of Shell’s and Ferrari’s—which have recently marked their 500th grand prix together—collaboration with iconic Danish company Lego. Of course, it’s just a detailed, full-scale model of Ferrari’s actual racecar but, unlike most Lego sets, it’s also one whose cockpit can actually support a person’s weight. Yes, you could sit in the car.
Last week, Pilipinas Shell introduced six buildable, limited edition, scale model Ferrari cars that are patterned after the full-size Lego version. The miniatures are made of Lego bricks, too, are powered by pull-back “micro engines,” and are now available in all Shell fuel stations nationwide. Shell said that the new promotion brings together three global brands and celebrates the more than 60 years of passion for performance between Shell and Ferrari.
Stephanie Cua, Pilipinas Shell marketing manager, said that the model cars will be available until the end of November.
“Besides celebrating our first collaboration with Lego, this is also our celebration of 60 years of technical partnership with Ferrari,” she said.
For her part, Vanessa Ejercito, Shell fuels brand manager, said that the campaign “perfectly represents the joint passion for performance and innovation that Shell and Ferrari stand for while incorporating the fun and imaginative nature of Lego products.”
“Whether they are fans of Ferrari, motor sports or Lego bricks, we think these toys will prove an exciting reward for customers,” Ejercito said.
The unique miniatures, modeled after Ferrari cars, are available as Ferrari F150 Italia, Scuderia Truck, 250 GT Berlinetta Passo Corto (SWB), F40, FXX and 458 Italia cars.
Cua explained that the Lego miniatures are sold for P140 for every P1,500 single or accumulated purchase of Shell V-Power + fuels, and for P180 for Fuel Save products. Customers that buy Shell Helix lubricants get a free Lego model for every oil-change package.
Meanwhile, the full-size Ferrari F1 Lego model—similar to that driven by Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso—will be displayed at the SM Megamall from November 2 to 4. Catch it before Ecclestone does.
