THE Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) recently said it is studying the designation of special bicycle lanes and putting up a reward system for people who would use them.
MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said that the agency is considering giving users a one-day exemption from the number coding scheme, or the Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program (UVVRP).
“Car owners who will use bikes once a week may be given an UVVRP exemption, but they must inform traffic constables that they using bicycles in lieu of their vehicles to avail of this reward,” Tolentino said.
The plan was revealed as MMDA announced it would be launching bicycles lane in Manila.
“An initial part of the bike lane includes a portion of the Remedios Circle and Roxas Boulevard,” Tolentino said, adding that the special lanes will cut down road accidents that involve bikes and motorized vehicles.
