PORSCHE at the hip LA Auto Show unveiled the equally hip all-new version of the Cayman—the model’s third generation.
The two-seat, fixed-roof twin to Porsche’s Boxster is offered in Cayman and Cayman S cuts. A longer wheelbase, a wider track and larger wheels define the new model.
Delivering more power with even better fuel economy, the two available flat-six engines are mounted in front of the rear axle, and are ensconced beneath a lightweight aluminum and steel body. The Cayman is powered by a 2.7-liter engine that makes 275 horsepower and can accelerate from a standstill to 100kph in 5.1 seconds while the Cayman S packs a 3.4-liter engine that produces 325 horsepower. Fitted with Porsche’s seven-speed PDK (the other gearbox option is a six-speed manual), the car can sprint from rest to 100kph in 4.4 seconds.
Porsche is quick to add, however, that blistering acceleration is only part of the new Cayman’s story, as its low center of gravity and optimal balance should allow the car to take on a slalom course like it were an Olympic skier.
Sounds like a German-translational glitch, but surely we get the point.
