KTM hypes availability of Duke 200; bike sells for P195k in promo

KTM has clinched 11 straight Dakar Rally wins since 2001, and would have likely been an even dozen if not for the fact that there was no Dakar gig in 2008.

In a few days’ time, KTM will be gunning for this 12th-straight victory at what is unequivocally known as the toughest, most grueling motor racing event on the planet. Credentials do not get any more stellar than this.

For several months already, Philippine bikers have been enjoying a KTM that—for all intents and purposes—is every bit the motorcycle that its more illustrious and pricier siblings are. It’s called the Duke 200, and Philippine KTM distributor Access Plus in an event last week showcased what most likely is the hottest, most promising model in the domestic motorcycle scene.

Key to this appeal is the price; the Duke 200 is sold for P220,000. Beginning this month and up until the 24th, the first 30 people going for it only need to dispense of P195,000 in a special promo. And we’re not even talking of the financing deals available for it (P39,000 down-payment and less than five grand a month, for example).

What you get for the price is no KTM-poseur. The Duke 200 boasts of WP suspension and ByBre disc brakes front and rear. Its four-stroke, dual-cam, single-pot 200cc engine is water-cooled, and churns out 25 horsepower that’s coursed through a six-speed gearbox where the clutch is bathed in oil. It has a distinct trellis frame. Its 17-inch wheels wear 110/70 and 150/60 tires fore and aft. Its styling is as kickass as any bike flashing KTM decals. It has digital instrumentation that includes a trip/mileage computer. And now, besides its signature orange hue, the bike is also offered in black or white paintjobs—with contrasting orange accents, of course. No doubt, the Duke 200 is as KTM as KTMs are.

“This bike is our foray into the ‘mainstream’ market,” said KTM Phils. Chief Executive Officer Toti Alberto during the Duke 200 event held at a ritzy Bonifacio Global City club. “But it is still more premium and better equipped than any 200cc or even slightly bigger motorcycle sold in the country.”

For his part, multiple motocross and superbike champion Glen Aguilar attested that the Duke 200, despite its size and price, feels every bit as a KTM. “It really rides like a KTM, with all the traits that KTMs are known for,” Aguilar said.

Another thing that ups the Duke 200’s appeal further is the availability of go-fast/look-cool pieces for it. “High performance and superior hardware made affordable is a value we offer that no other product can compete with. A naked bike is highly customizable—performance hardware can be added to enhance the already premium features. We expect modern bikers to balance function and convenience. The wise consumer asks for it, so we create the perfect formula,” Alberto said.

He also bared that the Duke 200 has indeed expanded KTM’s audience in the country, with many bikers who used to merely aspire for the brand now gaining access to it. Interestingly though, Alberto noted that while he expected these new set of buyers, Access Plus’ existing clientele—whose fold already owns one or several high-end KTMs and Ducatis—is also drawn to the bike.

“They say it’s perfect for daily riding, especially in traffic,” he said.

Well, if it can take on Dakar, surely it can take on anything.
