The 2013 Hollywood movie menu

While we’re still waiting for the last of the big 2012 Hollywood releases like Stephen Spielberg’s Lincoln, Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained and Les Miserables to screen locally, the menu for 2013 is out.

As expected, the movie going public will have its hefty servings of comic book superheroes, science fiction, sequels, prequels, reboots and zombies and combinations thereof. Here are but some:

Superheroes: Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, Thor: The Dark World and The Wolverine.

Science Fiction: Elysium with Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, directed by District 9’s Neil Blomkamp, Ender’s Game, based on a Nebula and Hugo award winning novel by Orson Scott Card, Oblivion, based on graphic novel by Joseph Kosinski, set in a post apocalyptic Earth starring Tom Cruise and Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster Waldau and Pacific Rim which I devoted this space to last week.

Sequels: A Good Day to Die Hard, Jai Courtney’s (Spartacus’ beloved Varro) career lives on as he plays Bruce Willis’ son, Star Trek: Into Darkness with every nerd girl’s dream boy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Despicable Me 2 heralds the return of the minions, 300: Rise of an Empire—a prequel with the dishy Rodrigo Santoro as Xerxes and Eva Green, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug which I hope will not be as stretched as its predecessor, Fast and Furious 6 with badass chicks Michelle Rodriguez (returning) and Gina Carano (from Haywire), Hangover 3 and Kick Ass 2.

Reboots and Retellings: BazLuh-rmann’s The Great Gatsby with Leonardo Di Caprio and Tobey Maguire, and The Lone Ranger with Johnny Depp as Tonto.

Zombies, the Undead and Apo-calypses: Warm Bodies where a zombie played by Nicholas Hoult falls in love, World War Z, Brad Pitt’s zombie apocalypse film based on the Max Brooks novel (this one originally had a December 21, 2012 release date), the Evil Dead remake with Juno’s Diablo Cody working on the screenplay and The World’s End with a beloved British comedic trio Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Martin Freeman.

Personally, I’m looking to be surprised. Which means, despite this big list I’ll keep my eye out for a small film with a good story.

Happy New Year’s everyone, I leave you with this belated quote from songwriter Brad Paisley, “Tomorrow, is the first blank page of a 365 page book. Write a good one.”
