Punishers pummel Sharks at Philsports

The Philippine Punishers clash against the Saipan Sharks in a historic American football match at the Philsports Complex in Pasig City on Saturday.

The Philippine Punishers hosted the Saipan Sharks, the national team of the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands in the first international American football match ever to be played at the Philsports Complex Track and Oval Field on Saturday.

Over 300 people witnessed the Philippine Punishers’ 13-6 win over the Saipan Sharks.

“These guys came to play ball and they gave us one helluva game,” said Punishers head coach Tim Beasley. The victory is a proof that Filipinos can compete and win against Americans and other international American football teams.

Among the foreign players in the Punishers’ 45-man roster are linebacker Steve Smith, wide receiver Ben Paulson and running back William Yeh; the remaining 35 players are all Filipinos.

The Punishers close out their exhibition season with a record of 4-1. Their only loss was against the Guam All-Stars in the Punishers first exhibition game played at Clark. Since then, the Punishers won 42-14 over the Hong Kong Cobras at Clark, 14-0 against the Beijing Guardians in Beijing, 32-12 over Hong Kong Cobras in Hong Kong and now 13-6, against Saipan Sharks in Manila.
