Managing director Christine Lagarde of International Monetary Fund (IMF) arrived in Manila on Thursday for a two-day visit.
This is her first visit to the country as part of her Southeast Asian tour that includes Malaysia and Cambodia.
Lagarde will visit President Benigno Aquino 3rd and other officials to determine the Philippines’ role in helping resolve the global economic situation.
The Paris-born IMF executive is expected to discuss IMF support for reforms being pushed by the Philippine government to accelerate economic growth.
The Philippines, once an IMF borrower, has $82 billion in foreign exchange reserves and is lending $1 billion to the IMF to help economies in the euro zone.
A lawyer in profession who specialized in labor cases, Lagarde became the first woman to head the IMF on July 5, 2011.
