Viloria stakes lofty rep vs. Tyson Marquez

FILIPINO-HAWAIIAN Brian Viloria know that his reputation as one of the best flyweight boxers in the world is on the line when decided his fight with Mexican Hernan “Tyson” Marquez in a unification match on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the Los Angeles Sports Arena in USA.

Viloria, 31, will do everything to knock out Marquez to cement his status as the No. 1 reigning flyweight fighter this year, since there are many rising boxers in his weight class including Filipinos who aspire to become champion.

“I need to prove something in this fight. I must win convincingly,” said Viloria, the current WBO titleholder, via phone patch interview by Solar. “I will do everything to get his belt and unify it.”

“There are many rising boxers in the flyweight class who want to become champion so I must secure the win.”

If ever Viloria or Marquez wins, one of them will face Filipino mandatory challenger Milan Melindo early next year.

Viloria (31-3-1 win-loss-draw card with 18 knockouts) said that he is confident that he can knock out the present WBO flyweight champion Marquez, considered by many as an aggressive boxer who loves to move forward.

“There will be a knockout in my favor. He will end up like Giovani Segura,” added Viloria, who will use great counter-punching skills to exploit Marquez’s attacking tactics. “Anything can happen in boxing and I’m sure Marquez also trains hard.”

“But I already prepared myself of what he is going to bring. I know he is a tough boxer but that’s not a problem. I focused well on attacks and counter-punching.”

Although Marquez didn’t say anything in his interview with philboxing.com writer Mike Lopez, Marquez just said that he will do his best to knock out Viloria and he is in great shape too, under trainer Robert Garcia.

“I will show Viloria what kind of Mexican I am,” said Marquez to philboxing.com.

But Viloria, a 2000 Sydney Olympian boxing USA team member, said that he already sees the weakness of Marquez (34-2 with 25 KOs) when he watched most of his fight tapes.

“I watched his fights and there are intricacies in his styles that we can actually exploit and work on,” added Viloria. “But I’m not underestimating him. I’m sure his going to fight on Saturday.”

The fight titled Champion vs. Champion: Brian “The Hawaiian Punch” Viloria vs. Hernan “Tyson” Marquez airs via satellite from Los Angeles on GMA 7’s Laban ng Lahi at 3 p.m.
