Fighting under the banner of Italia Thunder, Olympian lightweight boxer Charly Suarez won his first match against Robert Harutyunyan of Germany, in five rounds in the first day of the 2012-2013 season of the World Series of Boxing (WSB) at the Mediolanum Forum Assago in Milan, Italy on Saturday.
The Davao native ruled the entire bout, using hand speed and slick footwork scoring sharp combinations on his taller opponent who could only counter with single shots, many of which Suarez was able to dodge. A vicious left hook opened a nasty cut above Harutyunyan’s right eye in the fourth round.
Teams participating in the tourney are allowed to have a multinational line-up. In the previous edition of the meet, Suarez fought for India’s Mumbai Fighters, which took a leave this season.
Suarez is looking forward to fighting for the Philippines in the SEA Games next year and the Rio Olympics.
“I still want to fight in the Olympics for my country. I am aiming for a slot in Rio de Janeiro in 2016,” said Suarez, who declined lucrative offers to become a professional boxer.
