PH junior grapplers shine in judo-wrestling tourney

Promising junior grappler Chino Tancontian led the two-gold, two-silver and two-bronze medal haul of the country in the recently concluded 2012 International Judo-Wrestling Championship held at the King George gymnasium in Singapore.


Tancontian ruled the wrestling boys’ 13-year-old 45-kilogram and below event and the judo 13-year-old 45-kilogram (kg) category of the tournament which drew participants from 20 countries including Vietnam, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Macau and host Singapore.

Sydney Tancontian added a couple of silver medals in the judo girls’ 13-year-old mixed middleweight -63 kilograms and 16-year-old women’s heavyweight cadets -75kg. She also wound up third in the submission grappling adult women’s middleweight below 25-year-old.

Benz Binoya, an Ateneo de Davao University standout, made his presence felt by winning a bronze medal in the wrestling boys’ 16-year-old middleweight-63kg.

The Philippine Sports Commission is grooming the three athletes for the 2013 Asian Youth Games.
