HOUSE CHANGES 60-YEAR-OLD CHEMISTRY LAW
THE House of Representatives wants to retire the country’s 60-year-old Chemistry Law. The chamber approved House Bill 6575 or the Chemistry Law of 2012, which aims to strengthen the professional practice of chemistry in the country by updating its scope and making it at par with international practice, certification and standards. Rep. Juan Edgardo-Angara of Aurora province, the principal author of the measure, said that chemistry is an integral component of science and technology but the Philippines has been slow in adapting to changes. “It is imperative for the country to enact a policy instrument that is responsive to the demands of the profession and global competitiveness trends. This measure would clearly strengthen the profession and highlight its role,” said Angara, also the chairman of the House committee on higher and technical education.
