The Philippine Embassy in South Korea said on Friday that the Filipinos who died, including those who survived, during the capsizing of a Korean Coast Guard rescue boat off the coast of Jeju Island will soon be repatriated to the Philippines.
“The three Filipino seafarers who survived the incident in the waters near Jeju island are now under the care of the Korean Coast Guard awaiting repatriation to the Philippines,” Raul Hernandez, Foreign Affairs spokesman, said.
“Our embassy in Seoul is coordinating with the shipping agent’s representative for the repatriation of the survivors as well as the remains of the three who died,” he added.
Three Filipino seafarers from a Malaysian-registered cargo vessel Shinline died the afternoon of October 18 after the Korea Coast Guard boat, which rescued them capsized in the seas of Jeju Island.
The three who died are identified as Henry Morada, Blert Hautea and Jayson Sazon.
Those who survived are Christopher Malpaya, Christopher Lapitan and Gerald Espina.
There are a total of six Filipinos onboard Shinline.
The rescue boat capsized because of the high waves in the area, Hernandez said.
He added that the Philippine labor attaché there already contacted the Jeju Coast Guard for details on the seafarers.
