A lawmaker is seeking the establishment of more rehabilitation centers so that the country’s estimated 1.6 million drug addicts could be attended to.
Rep. Nancy Catamco of North Cotabato province made the proposal under House Bill 6618. The measure seeks to establish a Drug Abuse and Alcoholism Rehabilitation and Treatment Center in every region. The rehabilitation centers will be run by the Departments of Health and Social Welfare and Development.
Catamco said that while there are private alcohol and drug abuse rehabilitation and treatment centers, these are scarce and costly.
“A healthy human resource is the nation’s most important capital for growth. Alcohol and drug abuse affects all sectors of our society. The rehabilitation of an estimated 1.6 million drug addicts is never a waste of time and money,” Catamco said.
“Helping alcohol and drug victims regain self-respect and dignity and helping them to be reintegrated into the society is worth more than the investment that the government will use to establish and maintain the said centers,” she added.
