AUTHORITIES have rescued over the weekend 25 persons said to be potential victims of human trafficking at a port in a remote village in Tawi-Tawi province, police reports said.
Reports reaching the Philippine National Police central operations center in Camp Crame on Monday said that the 25 were rescued at about 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Sea Port in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi.
The reports said that the operations leading to the rescue of 25, allegedly to be smuggled out to Sabah, were conducted jointly by Anti-Trafficking Task Group and Bongao Inter-Agency Task Force.
Senior Supt. Rodelio Jocson Tawi-Tawi and director of Provincial Police Office said that the rescue operations were conducted following information on alleged group of persons to be smuggled out at the said port.
Jocson added that the rescued potential victims of human trafficking have been turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development for proper disposition and counseling.
Because of its close proximity to the boundaries of Philippines and Malaysai, Tawi-Tawi province was being used as either transshipment or jumping point of syndicate engage in human trafficking and smuggling.
