‘Unclean spirits’ leave tons of trash in cemeteries

FOR some, the All Souls’ Day—November 2—is the best day to spend time with their departed loved ones, but for the personnel of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), this marks the start of cleaning up cemeteries in the Metropolis.

After the exodus of people in the observance of the All Saints’ Day, personnel from the MMDA Parkway Clearing Group on Friday started cleaning up various cemeteries in Metro Manila.

In a report to MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino, MMDA Parkway Clearing Group (PCG) head Francis Martinez said that as of 12 noon yesterday, a total of 37 truckloads of garbage were collected from various cemeteries.

He said that nine truckloads of garbage were collected both from the Manila South Cemetery and Manila North Cemetery; five from both La loma Cemetery and Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina City; two from both Valenzuela public cemetery and Libingan ng mga Bayani in Fort Bonifacio Taguig City; and one truckload from both San Juan public cemetery and Barracks Cemetery in Pasig City.

Tolentino said that MMDA’s cleanup operations will continue until Sunday.

Lamberto Peña, manager of the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City said that the garbage in the cemetery is ‘very manageable,’ since they have already appealed to the public to bring with them their trash.

Manila South Cemetery Administrator Henry Dy also noted the decrease in the volume of garbage left behind by visitors as compared to last year’s observance of All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days.

He said that environmental groups have also been helping MMDA personnel in the cleaning up drive.

“Malaking tulong ang mga NGO [non-government officials] dahil namumulot sila ng plastic na puwede pang i-recycle [NGOs are of great help because they pick up recyclable plastic materials],” he added.

Tolentino said that at least 150 PCG personnel were deployed in Manila North Cemetery, the largest cemetery in Metro Manila, to help in the clean-up operations.

He said that the day-off and vacation leave of all PCG personnel have been cancelled just to speed up the cleaning of all cemeteries in Metro Manila.
