MMDA keeps watch on erring bus firm

THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is keeping an eye on some units of a bus firm, which was involved in a fatal accident along the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) in Muntinlupa City.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino on Wednesday alerted the agency’s traffic constables to be on guard against Lippad Transit as— 21 of its bus units were suspended by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

Tolentino issued the order amid reports that some of the units of Lippad Transit were still plying their routes despite the suspension order imposed by LTFRB.

“There were reports that some of the buses of Lippad Transit are still plying their routes, they should be prevented because the suspension is still in effect,” he said.

One of the Lippad Transit buses (PXP 822) on November 7 rammed an oil lorry along the SLEX in Muntinlupa City killing two people and wounding five others.

This prompted the LTFRB to suspend the operations of not only the bus concerned, but 21 units of Lippad Transit for 30 days.

In its resolution, the LTFRB directed the operator of the bus firm to subject its drivers into road safety seminar and compulsary drug testing.

The MMDA, which is the law enforcement unit of LTFRB, together with the Land Transportation Office (LTO), and the Philippine National Police Traffic Management Group (PNP-TMG) was directed to apprehend and impound the said bus units if found to be still operating.
