Derailed train leaves five injured; heavy downpour causes mishap

SARIAYA, Quezon: Mayor Rosauro Masilang assured the families of five casualties from a train with 128 passengers that went off its track in Brgy. Canda on Friday as the police continue to secure the area while conducting further investigation.


Five who sustained slight injuries were identified as Jesus Sevilla, 47, of Naga City; Felomina Pantaleon, 66, of San Pedro, Laguna; Ybeth Molina, 47, of Naga City, Alvin Cruz, 44, of Pasig City; and Aminda Granada of Makati City. The victims were confined for treatment at the Lucena City Doctors Hospital and may be allowed to go home on Saturday.

Masilang said that the Provincial Police District of Quezon are still guarding the area while Philippine National Railways technicians are repairing the damaged rail. Only three coaches of the ill-fated train were partially damaged with the first coach half-tumbled on the ground and the two others slightly twisted.

Police investigation disclosed that the train ran off its track near a bridge in sitio Piring in Brgy. Canda. Continuous rains caused the rail tracks to be slippery rail track. It was found that there is neither foul play nor signs that some elements sabotaged train.
