LTFRB suspends Cebu buses over series of lethal mishaps

THE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) suspended three of the 11 bus units of Jegan Bus over a deadly road accident—the brakes of one of the firm’s buses failed while negotiating a downhill curve in Toledo, Cebu City on Saturday night, killing seven of its passengers and injuring 43 others.

In the report sent by the LTFRB in Central Visayas (CV) Regional Office, the three suspended bus units were included in the franchise that were involved in deadly accidents.

At the same time (LTFRB-CV) said that they have also ordered the insurance provider of the bus to settle the burial claims of the relative and families of the victims.

The assistance promised by the Jegan Bus firm will be given on top of the passenger accident insurance provided by the insurance establishment.

“The passenger accident insurance payment is provided for by law. The promised financial assistance is separate,” LTFRB chief Jaime Jacob said.

Jacob said that the driver of the ill-fated Jegan bus Allan Pastedio is set to be charged by Toledo Traffic Police office for reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, multiple injuries and damage to property.

“The bus owner has moral obligations considering that eight passengers were killed and 42 others were injured in the bloody accident,” he added.

Reports reaching LTFRB-Monitoring Center in Central Office Quezon City said that the Jegan bus (GXD-545) rammed into a concrete wall at a curve sharp of Brgy. Lutopan in Toledo city.

The bus driver admitted that the bus pedal brake failed. The driver is now in the custody of Aloguinsan Police station.
