ITCZ seen to trigger floods, landslides in Mindanao

Flash floods and landslides may threaten Mindanao as the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) continues to cause rain showers, the state weather bureau said on Sunday.

Weather Forecaster Chris Perez said that ITCZ continues affecting Mindanao while cold front across Extreme Northern Luzon.

An ITCZ is a merger of winds from different directions, which is also a breeding ground for low-pressure areas.

Perez said that Palawan and Mindanao would be cloudy with moderate to heavy rain showers and thunderstorms which may trigger flashfloods and landslides while Cagayan Valley, in the northern part of Luzon, will have light rains.

He said that the northeast monsoon is expected to bring occasional light to moderate rains over the parts of Luzon.

The northeast monsoon is the cold wind from Siberia that blows into the country, usually from mid-October until mid-February.

He said there is still no weather disturbance or potential cyclone near the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

Perez added that they do not expect any cyclone formation in the next three to four days as a result a good weather condition will prevail in many parts of the country until Thursday.

He added that the state weather bureau is also not expecting any low-pressure area that could affect the country in the next few days.

However, Perez advised the public to still bring umbrellas due to localized thunderstorm could still bring light passing rains mostly in the afternoon or evening.

Except for possible light passing rains due to localized thunderstorm, the rest of the country including Metro Manila will be generally sunny until Thursday,” Perez noted.

In its advisory, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that Metro Manila and the rest of the country would be partly cloudy with isolated brief rain showers or thunderstorms.

Also, Pagasa said moderate to strong winds blowing from the east to northeast will prevail over Northern Luzon and its coastal waters will be moderate to rough.

Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the northeast and east with slight to moderate seas.

The weather agency also said strong to gale force winds associated with the northeast monsoon may affect the northern and eastern seaboard of Northern Luzon. ”Fishing boats and other small sea crafts are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels alerted against big waves,” it said.
