Lawmaker lashes at foes’ sham accusations

ILOILO CITY: Rep. Jerry Treñas of Lone city said that more accusations and more attacks are coming from his political foes as desperate moves aimed to destroy him as the May 2013-midterm elections looms near.

The solon admitted that he is not surprise to hear the accusations of alleged misuse of public funds after father and son, Raul Sr. and Jr. Gonzalez, lodged a Request for Assistance (RAS) with the Office of the Ombudsman Visayas on November 7, 2012.

The Ombudsman RAS specifies the alleged misuse of about P8.5 billion in public funds, while Treñas was in office as city mayor from 2001 to 2010.

Treñas stressed that the Gonzalezes did not file a complaint but only a RAS. These are cheap political maneuvers seeking media mileage by his detractors, whom he had successfully trounced in the 2010 elections with an overwhelming majority of more than 25,000 votes, the solon said.

“The people of Iloilo City already spoke their decision in 2010 and the accusations came from political persons during a political season. Why the father and son wait for several years to lodge their charges when election is fast approaching,” Treñas said.

The Commission on Audit report did not mention or send a notice for any disqualification or disallowance in 2002 to 2010.

Raul Jr. is challenging Treñas in a one-on-one political battle for the city’s congressional seat in May 2013. Treñas defeated then representative Raul Jr. in 2010, while his father, former justice secretary Raul Sr. was also defeated by mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog for his current seat.

Treñas, Mabilog and vice mayor Jose Espinosa 3rd are up for re-election and currently in tandem against the Gonzalez camp.
