Cordillera police burn marijuana plants

CAMP DANGWA, La Trinidad, Benguet: More than 1,000 fully grown marijuana plants having a total market value of at least P200,000 were successfully destroyed by combined police operatives and anti-narcotics agents during a marijuana eradication operation in Sitio Wa-in, Brgy. Bugnay, Tinglayan, Kalinga last week.

Regional Director Benjamin Magalong of the Police Regional Office said that government troops were able to destroy marijuana plants that were planted in a parcel of land having an area of about 2,500 square meters.

After the marijuana eradication operation, the police operatives and anti-narcotics agents proceeded to Brgy. Buscalan for the conduct of “pulong-pulong sa barangay” which is part of their barangay-based public safety services meant to inform residents of the hazards of being involved in the illegal-marijuana trade.

The operating units were composed of elements from the Kalinga provincial police office and the Third Manuever Co. of the Regional Public Safety Battalion.

Meanwhile, in Mt. Province, suspected marijuana bricks where found in a parcel delivered at a JRS Express Branch in Sub-ang, Bontoc, Mt. Province.

P/Chief Insp. Dyann Bangcawayan responded to a report from the branch manager of the courier service that suspected hashish, wrapped with transparent cellophane, was being coursed through the establishment.

Subsequent investigations showed that a certain Reagan Lee Kut-om Moko, Counter Clerk of the branch, received the parcel on November 5.

The package was described as a blue plastic envelope with an attached “official record book” and allegedly sent by a person whose identity was withheld.

Afterwards, the branch manager of the establishment inspected the said items and found the marijuana hashish.

The operation yielded three suspected marijuana bricks weighing 320 grams with an estimated market value of P8, 000.

The inventory was made at the Bontoc Municipal Police Station.

Police are still trying to verify the identity of the sender of the parcel.

Meanwhile, Magalong lauded the community for its support for the campaign to eliminate all forms of illegal drugs in the region.

Such accomplishments assure the public of more operations related in the campaign against illegal drugs, he said.
