Shootout leaves six gunmen dead

SIX suspected members of a gun-for-hire group were reportedly killed in an encounter with law enforcers in a village in Calamba, Laguna province on Monday, police reports said.

Initial reports reaching the Philippine National Police (PNP) operations center in Camp Crame said that the encounter between the police and the gun-for-hire group took place at about 8:30 a.m. on Monday at Brgy. Lecheria in Calamba, Laguna.

Chief Supt. James Melad, police director in southern Tagalog, said in the reports that five of the suspects were killed on the spot, while one was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

The police official said that the gun-for-hire group, which is operating in the region, had been under surveillance by the police for weeks prior to the encounter in Calamba on Monday morning.
