Irrigation ditches eyed as flood control
Gov. Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla Jr. of Cavite, Rep. Edgar San Luis of the 4th District of Laguna and members of the National Irrigation Agency are seeking the use of irrigation systems around Laguna de Bay to prevent the lake from flooding into lakeshore barangays.
Pumping floodwaters from Laguna via the irrigation pipelines into the agricultural areas in Cavite, both areas hope to implement this project to prevent floods in Laguna, while increasing the productivity of Cavite, the officials said in a committee hearing on Tuesday at the House of Representatives.
Governor Remulla is asking for a meeting Secretary Rogelio Singson of Department of Public Works and Highways and Presidential Adviser on Environmental Protection Nereus Acosta, to thresh out a solution to the flood problem.
Dr. Mahar Lagmay of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services said that the agency should also form a technical working group to assess and evaluate the conditions of the pipelines used for the irrigation if they are in working order or rehabilitation.
“There are no political boundaries in natural disasters, what harms you also harm us,” stressed Remulla Jr.
