STATE seismologists recorded a magnitude-5.1 quake that rocked the Cagayan area in northern Luzon before dawn on Sunday.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said that the tremor was recorded at 2:07 a.m. and was tectonic in origin.

In its bulletin, Phivolcs said that the epicenter of the quake was estimated at 42-kilometer southwest of Calayan, Cagayan.

However, it did not immediately cite specific areas where the quake was felt.

Phivolcs said that while it expects no damage to be caused by the quake, there might be aftershocks.

Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey estimated the quake at magnitude 5.1.
