Legendary cue master Efren “Bata” Reyes started his title retention bid on a bright note by thumping American Jayson Shaw, 9-6, in the 11th Predator International 10-Ball Championships on Friday at the Robinson’s Galleria.
Reyes advanced into the next round after getting an opening-round bye in the tournament which offers $10,000 top prize.
Former world champion Ronnie Alcano, Ramil Gallego, promising artist RJ Bautista and Jundel Mazon also cruised into the next round as they whipped their respective rivals.
Alcano, the 2006 World 9-Ball and 2007 8-Ball champion, outplayed compatriot Johann Chua, 9-8, while Gallego defeated teammates Lee Vann Corteza, 9-6, and Jericho Banares, 9-5.
Bautista, on the other hand, shocked American Max Eberle, 9-6, while Mazon also made his presence felt by toppling 2010 World 9-Ball titlist Francisco “Django” Bustamante, 9-3.
In other result, Thorsten Hohmann of Germany overpowered Raj Hundal of India, 9-2. “John Mcdonald chose and announced that nickname ‘Hitman’ to me years ago. I did not choose it. It just stuck. But really to me it makes no difference what they call me aside from my real name,” said Hohmann.
