I have long wondered how those who profess support for the candidacy of personalities with questionable ethical qualities (frankly, “crookedness”) can justify it. I may have just gotten a glimpse of the answer. There is this young man who explains: “Everybody in government is corrupt anyway, so what matters is performance. If an official does his work well, he is entitled to a just reward for it. Whatever he gets, hey, it’s just a well-earned commission.”

My friends Oca Dizon and Jojo Florentino, who are Noynoy-Mar diehards, said they would vote for Frank Drilon and Butch Abad for senator. I told them I would definitely vote for Frank, and Butch as well, if Butch is a candidate, which he isn’t. They were surprised to hear that Butch is not running for senator.

The last time that I was in Kathmandu was almost 10 years ago. What I remember are the spicy but delicious food, the monkey temple, the child goddess, the wonderful pashminas, a morning of bird watching in almost freezing weather and of course the view of the Himalayas. Now I am back and the chilly weather is a welcome respite from Manila’s scorching heat. I am back to meet with our conservation partner, Bird Conservation Nepal (BCN).
