FORMER world champion Roy Jones Jr. offered himself to be a mediator between world pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. to try to salvage their super mega bout this year.
Jones, 43, who fought for five weight divisions, said he is willing to hold a talk between the two best world’s fighters anytime for the sake of the million boxing fans around the world.
“I’ll try to be the mediator and try my best to make the fight happen.
The fans really want the fight,” Jones told 8countnews.com reporter Brad Cooney via podcast on Friday. “I want to tell Floyd and Manny that I’m offering myself to mediate negotiations.”
He got only one stipulation in his proposed negotiation: “Leave the promoters home.”
“I want them to sit with me in one room and I could represent HBO and I’m pretty sure I could make the fight to happen. I’ll guarantee to do my best. I’m also a fighter just like them,” he added.
So far, the negotiation between Pacquiao and Mayweather isn’t producing any positive results, according to Pacquiao’s chief promoter Bob Arum.
In recent reports, Mayweather has demanded a May fifth bout, which was turned down by the Pacquiao camp because they wanted a May 26 or June 9 bout to produce more money.
Now, it was Mayweather who turned down Pacquiao’s 50-50 split in the fight purse in their recent phone conversation that took place a week ago.
Pacquiao and Arum, as expected, did not agree to Mayweather’s $40
million flat rate offer, which will leave the $60 million and the entire pay-per-view share and other all revenues to Mayweather.
When asked by Cooney if Mayweather deserves more earnings than the Filipino fighter, Jones said: “We’ll try to work that out because they are both good fighters that deserve more. We can’t blame them.”
