World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. is looking at unbeaten Mexican World Boxing Council (WBC) champion Abner Mares for a unification bout next year.
Mares holds 25-0 win-loss with 13 knockouts.
“Mares is one of the top dogs but it would be a great fight,” 30-year-old Donaire Jr., who now improved to 31-1 win-loss card with 20 knockouts, told reporters over the weekend. “It’s going to be an exciting bout if it pushes through.”
But if the Donaire-Mares fight won’t happen, he may possibly defend his title against Guillermo Rigondeaux next year.
Meanwhile, Donaire Jr. climbed from No. 6 to No. 5 in the latest Ring Magazine’s pound-for-pound rating for knocking out Mexican Jorge Arce in the third round to retain the WBO super bantamweight crown recently, at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, USA.
According to the Ring Magazine, Donaire Jr. bumped off undefeated lightweight Adrien Boner, who holds a record of 25-0 with 21 knockouts, at No. 5.
Donaire’s compatriot Filipino Manny Pacquiao fell to No. 7 following his knockout defeat in the 6th round to Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez who moved up to No. 3. Argentina’s Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez remains at No. 4.
Undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) stayed at No. 1 and Andre Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s), the reigning WBC/World Boxing Association super middleweight champion, moved up at No. 2.
