LOS ANGELES: Chris Paul scored his team’s final eight points as the Los Angeles Clippers rediscovered their winning ways with a 107-102 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday (Saturday in Manila).
Paul finished with 30 points, 13 assists and six rebounds for the Clippers, who snapped a modest two-game losing skid on the heels of a franchise record winning 17-game streak.
“It is a good win for us because it is a division game,” Paul said.
Kobe Bryant had 38 points for the Lakers, who have lost three of their last four contests.
Los Angeles fell behind by 19 in the final quarter before going on a 12-3 run. With 1:44 left, Bryant hit a long jumper to pull the Lakers to within two, 99-97.
Paul then took over and carried the Clippers on his back down the stretch.
The Lakers lost Dwight Howard with just over a minute left when he fouled out trying to guard Paul.
Paul’s jumper with 20 seconds remaining helped ice the victory, making it 103-97.
In the first half, the Clippers seized command with a 15-2 run. Matt Barnes’ three-pointer capped the surge and made it 42-24 in favour of the Clippers.
Consecutive baskets by Bryant capped an 11-0 run by the Lakers who trailed 48-43 with just over three minutes left in the first half.
But the Clippers outscored the Lakers 13-8 the rest of the way and Paul’s jumper at the buzzer gave them a 61-51 lead going into the break.
Paul had 12 points and 11 assists in the opening half.
