Streaking Ateneo de Manila University will be gunning for its seventh straight victory when it goes up against defending champion De La Salle University today in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 75 women’s volleyball tournament.
The Lady Eagles battles the Lady Archers at 3:30 p.m. after the National University-University of the Philippines match at 2 p.m. at the Arena in San Juan City.
Ateneo is unbeaten in six games to top the standings while La Salle occupies the second spot with 5-1 mark.
“La Salle is strong. They’re tall, they’re the best blocking team in the league,” said Ateneo mentor Roger Gorayeb referring to La Salle’s towering duo of reigning Most Valuable Player Abigail Marano and sophomore Mika Reyes.
Besides Marano and Reyes, other players to watch out for are utility spiker Michele Gumabao, and open hitters Wensh Tiu and Ara Galang.
For its part, Ateneo has Alyssa Valdez, the league’s leading scorer who had an average output of 20 points per game, along with team captain Dzi Gervacio, Fille Cainglet and Gretchen Ho.
“Their [Ateneo] lineup is intact. They’re really the team to beat this season,” La Salle coach Ramil de Jesus stressed.
The Lady Eagles had a hard time in beating the Adamson Lady Falcons, 22-25, 25-23, 25-18, 23-25, 15-11, while the Lady Archers totally outclassed the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons in straight sets, 25-15, 25-8, 25-8, in their last games.
