THE Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) expressed its readiness to support the country’s hosting of the 2013 FIBA-Asia (Federation International Basketball Association-Asia) Basketball Championship on August 1 to 11 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
PSC Chairman Richie Garcia on Monday said that both the Philsports Arena in Pasig City and the Ninoy Aquino Stadium along Vito Cruz Street in Malate, Manila could be used as practice or alternate venues for the prestigious event.
Some 1,000 athletes from 16 countries including powerhouse China, Iran, Japan and Korea are seeing action in the event, the hosting of which was earlier awarded to Lebanon but the FIBA-Asia later decided otherwise because of volatile condition in the area.
The FIBA Asia Championship serves as qualifier for the 2014 FIBA World Cup.
The Philippines hosted and ruled the event in 1973, that was then known as Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC) Basketball Championship.
